Universal by design

One monitor, not one monitor per valve family

A plant rarely standardises on a single valve. CANARY is built so that the same unit fits across a mixed fleet: the plant and valve connectors are specified per order, and the control-signal interpretation is set in configuration rather than in hardware revisions.

Connector option

Solenoid connectors

Form A, B and C per DIN EN 175301-803, formerly DIN 43650. Fitted to valves with no on-board electronics.

Monitored: supply voltage and current, vibration, acoustic emission and oil temperature — covering coil, cavitation, and wiring and supply.

Connector option

7-pin and 6+PE

MIL-C-5015 style 7-pin, and 6+PE per DIN EN 175201-804 or DIN 43563. The common proportional and servo-proportional interface.

Monitored: everything above, plus command and spool position feedback — which enables hysteresis, response threshold, null behaviour and tracking.

Connector option — standard

11+PE and 12-pin

EN 175201-804 11+PE and DIN 43651 12-pin. The fullest interface, and the configuration the published specifications describe.

Monitored: everything above, plus digital status and fault outputs and further generic signal pins.

How ordering works. Send the valve data sheet with your order and the plant-side and valve-side connectors are built to match that valve’s interface, including the pin assignment. Pin assignments differ between manufacturers on the same physical connector, so the data sheet governs. The connector and valve reference sets out the common interfaces and what each one lets the monitor see.

Control signal support

Eighteen control-signal configurations, not one

CANARY is frequently assumed to be a ±10 V device. It is not. Four of the monitored pins are universal inputs, each independently configurable for voltage or current drive across the ranges below. That covers proportional valves driven on a voltage command and servo valves driven directly into a torque motor on a current command, along with the process-loop and low-level ranges in between.

Channels

4

Universal inputs, each set independently. The command and the actual-value feedback can run on different signal types on the same valve.

Configuration

Per pin

Signal type is selected per pin at commissioning and recorded in the unit’s configuration. Changing a valve does not mean changing the monitor.

Digital states

24 V

Enable, enable acknowledgment and the fault-free output are read as isolated 24 V digital states, with timing between them measured.

The plant signal is never interrupted to measure it. On every universal input the sense element stays permanently in series with the signal, so no configuration setting and no monitor fault can open the path between plant and valve. Current-mode measurement does not break the loop; voltage-mode measurement does not load it. This is a deliberate design constraint, not a mode you select.

Auxiliary inputs

Two further configurable analogue inputs accept either 0 to 10 V or 4 to 20 mA transmitters, with sensor supply provided. These are where pressure transmitters on ports A and B connect to enable internal leakage and erosion detection, or where an oil-presence sensor connects to cover external weeping.

What this means for a mixed fleet

A site running Bosch Rexroth proportional valves on a ±10 V command alongside Moog servo valves on a ±40 mA torque-motor drive uses the same monitor on both. The difference is the connector specified at order and the signal code set at commissioning.

Commissioning

What a site needs to provide

Required

  • A 24 VDC plant supply at the valve
  • A commissioning period during which the unit learns the valve's own baseline
  • A re-learn after any valve exchange, repair, oil flush or change of setpoint regime

Optional, and what each unlocks

  • Pressure transmitters on ports A and B — enables internal leakage and edge erosion detection. Without them that mode reports as not monitored
  • Coil thermal data from the valve data sheet — enables the estimated coil temperature check against the coil's class limit
  • An oil-presence sensor on an auxiliary input — the only way to detect external weeping, which no on-board sensor sees

Certification status. The monitor is designed and tested against the standards listed above. Formal certification submissions are in progress and no certification mark is claimed at this time.
